From the Preface of this 251 page book: "'Adolescent Literature as a Complement to the Classics' is based on two assumptions: 1) The classics comprise the canon of literature that is mostly taught in our schools; and 2) most teachers are familiar with adolescent literature, or young adult novels, but are unsure how to incorporate their use in classrooms. This book provides the necessary information so that teachers may confidently use young adult novels in conjunction with commonly taught classics. By using young adult novels in conjunction with the classics, teachers can expose students to reading that becomes relevant and meaningful. Additionally, the reading levels of most young adult books are within a range of ease that most students can master. The biggest names in the field of adolescent literature have contributed chapters: Kay Bushman, Ted Hipple, Patricia Kelly, Betty Poe, Bobbie Samuels, Leila Christenbury, Bob Small, Charlie Reed, and Ruth Cline, among others.
